A Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada can sponsor a family member who is a foreign citizen seeking to immigrate to Canada.

To qualify as a sponsor, the family member must meet the following requirements:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Live in Canada
• Have sufficient income to support the foreign relative (if applicable)

Who can be sponsored?

• Spouses (legally married or common-law couple)
• Parents and grandparents
• Dependent children (under age 22), including adopted children
• Orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchildren, who are under 18 years of age and not married or in a free union
• Any relative if the sponsor is alone in Canada and has no one else who they can sponsor, as mentioned above
